Safiya Sinclair's childhood was dominated by her father's strict Rastafari beliefs and his fear of "Babylon," which led him to control every aspect of her life. Her mother, though loyal to her husband, provided Safiya with books and poetry, which became her solace and a means to find her own voice. As Safiya rebelled against her father's oppressive rules, their relationship became increasingly volatile, leading to inevitable clashes.
