Women Who Inspire - Dr. Sylvia Rousseau

Women Who Inspire - Dr. Sylvia Rousseau

This time of year is an energetic refresher. We're grateful for the warmer temperatures, the Spring Equinox balancing day and night. The changing seasons are nature's masterclass in contrast, where the coolness of the night air gives way to the warmth of the daylight and vice versa. Contrast has always informed our definition of a Strong Woman in many ways. A Fanm Djanm knows the value of ubiquities -  love, friendship, etc.. Yet, she remains unafraid to shape and give meaning to more nuanced areas of life.

Spring is a reminder of what's already within but lies dormant. The education icon Dr. Sylvia Rousseau sat in front of our camera to ring in spring. An advocate for the propulsion of civic engagement through education and a self-described "team innovator," Dr. Rousseau knows a thing or two about seasons of contraction and bloom.

Since 1968, Rousseau shaped the landscape of education and, like many Black women, has been on the receiving end of the title "first" throughout her career. Including being the first African American high school teacher in Kokomo, Indiana, and the first African-American and first woman to become principal of Santa Monica High School.

A strong woman knows the value of facing what might be challenging because of the contrast it can provide for the door she's left open for those after her.

Let the reemergence of nature inspire you to walk the line of wisdom and boldness in making your journey your own.

Happy First Day of Spring!
