World Afro Day is a global day of celebration and liberation for Afro hair and identity. On this day in 2016, a US federal court ruled that banning locs in the workplace was not considered discrimination.
In 2019, the CROWN Act was created as a means to protect against discrimination based on race-based hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools. In 2022, this bill passed in the House of Representatives but not in the Senate. Today, 20 states and counting have passed the CROWN Act into law, and progress is being made to end hair-based discrimination around the world.
As we continue to fight for change and justice, let's take a moment to celebrate Afro hair. Hair that comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Hair that deserves protection. Hair so divine it sometimes requires a whole day devoted to caring for it. Hair so versatile it can withstand infinite styles. Hair so powerful it became a symbol of liberation. Good hair. Hair so iconic it created culture, identity, and art. Hair that is as unique as the person it grows from. Hair that is professional, playful, artistic, expressive. Hair that’s whatever you want it to be. Happy World Afro Day!
