Before the world shut down, on Sunday, March 8th, we hosted an empowering brunch with some of Austin’s brightest WOC creatives and entrepreneurs in honor of International Women’s Day. It was magical. It was inspiring. It was everything we could ask for. Thinking back to that day, which symbolized so much for me and what Fanm Djanm represents… In the end, all I can say is, we really are our ancestors’ wildest dreams.
Fanm Djanm is and always will be about celebrating phenomenal women in our community. It will always be about sisterhood, and our International Women’s Day Brunch reflected that and more…
Just a few hours before our brunch, I sat at a round, glass table at a suite at the Line Austin, pen in hand, writing down our guests’ names and little note from my heart. Dear Riley, Whitney, Laolu, Virginia, Aliyah, Cassie, Oyin, Ashley, Marie, Tabitha, Melat… All of these women, incredible in their own rights. A few of which I’ve worked with before on Fanm Djanm shoots, others I had not yet met, but whose work I admired from afar… I was thrilled that they could join me, adorned in their Fanm Djanm headwraps. What an honor to have them pull up their chair to join our very own table in the middle of Austin. Talking about whatever we wanted. As as Riley wrote, “To just be.” We were being ourselves and that’s what the celebration was all about.
